Design Inspiration: Dye Job, cont.

A while back I started some socks with some gorgeous glacier colored yarn from one of my Indie Dyer supporters, WN Yarns. I tell ya, these socks just flew off my needles. Between watching the yarn progress in its colors and developing a pretty easy but still engaging pattern, these were a super fast knit. … Continue reading Design Inspiration: Dye Job, cont. →

Heel Flaps: lots of options

Knitting socks top down is all hunky-dory and easy as its a simple tube until you get to the heel. That's when a bit of engineering comes in. You must sufficiently accommodate that part of the human anatomy while also still maintaining comfort. And if you can provide a cushioning or slightly thicker surface for … Continue reading Heel Flaps: lots of options →

Essential Knitting Books

Once you're a knitter you also start collecting yarn, supplies and, inevitably, knitting books. Many are simply collections of patterns for specific items, often assembled by a designer or a knitting magazine. If you're looking for an authentic pattern for Turkish socks, well, there's a book for that. These books fill a definite niche, of … Continue reading Essential Knitting Books →

Design Inspiration: Patterns, cont.

I tell ya, I love a good stitch pattern. They stick with me and I mull them over. One that called out to me a while back is good ol' Tilting Blocks. I love this sort of pattern: strategically placed increases and decreases create a natural zig-zag torque to the knitted fabric once a few … Continue reading Design Inspiration: Patterns, cont. →

Pick-ups don’t have to be scary

My favorite heel type is the heel flap; classic and versatile. You can do a lot with the good ole' heel flap (different lengths, different patterns, different yarn) but many folks are stymied by the fact that you have to pick up new live stitches on either edge: what do I pick up? Do I … Continue reading Pick-ups don’t have to be scary →

Design Inspiration: Dye Job

Last time I wrote about getting inspiration from a particular knitting pattern that existed in some form already. This week I'm blogging about designing a sock pattern based on my excitement about a particular yarn and its stunning color. Indie yarn dyers are awesome and I follow many on social media. One of my longtime … Continue reading Design Inspiration: Dye Job →

Design Inspiration: Patterns

I often get asked how I come up with my ideas so I thought I'd start a series of posts about my design process. I get inspiration all over the place and the process can be a quick one, taking a week or two, or it can span many years before it finally comes to … Continue reading Design Inspiration: Patterns →

Let’s all join!

Joining new yarn is a must-have skill for every knitter. Even if you are just working with one color, eventually your skein of yarn is finished and you must start or join a new one to keep going. How to do that? Don't just tie a knot. Knots are a definite no-no! They leave a … Continue reading Let’s all join! →

Tension: it’s a good thing

We all know that knitting is relaxing but I hope that at the same time that you're knitting and enjoying yourself, you're also just a little bit tense as well. In your fingers, that is, in particular with how you advance your yarn into your stitches. Having a nice even tension while you knit helps … Continue reading Tension: it’s a good thing →

Hello and Welcome!

Welcome to my first blog post! This is a new adventure to really get out there in social media and share my love of knitting and maybe some reviews and recommendations and even some promotions for my patterns! I'm going to keep it short and sweet so that I have more incentive to sit down … Continue reading Hello and Welcome! →

A little about me:

I’m a long-time knitter who learned from my mom when I was about 5. My very first project was a little scarf for my teddy bear and I remember it well. Wish I still had it! I watched my mom knit my entire life and now it’s a big part of my life, too. Early on, I realized that I really enjoyed customizing my knits and I rapidly graduated to designing my own patterns. With some encouragement from knitting friends, I started publishing them on Ravelry and haven’t looked back since. Most recently, one of my designs was chosen for Sock Madness (an international speed knitting contest hosted on Ravelry). It was amazing to see folks from all over the world knitting up my design. So as you can see, I love sharing my passion with others. Since I teach biology and botany at the university level, its natural that I teach knitting and knitting techniques as well. You’ll see a lot of botanical inspiration in my knits, as well as ethnic and traditional designs. I love working out new challenging ways to do things and really stretch the constraints of what you can do with a hand knit design (translation: fun for expert knitters). And then I usually like to turn around and design an easy but elegant knit that is beginner friendly. Besides knitting and adding to my yarn stash (can you say S.A.B.L.E.?), I enjoy collecting knitting books & patterns, quilting, painting and drawing. Join me as I knit and muse and review and have fun in this ancient craft.
